Introducing product design and engineering to students at Princethorpe College

Published on: 27th March 2018

On 17th March representatives from our design and engineering teams attended the Princethorpe College Careers Fair aimed at students from years 10 through to Sixth Form.

This visit was part of our ongoing effort to encourage more students from local schools to consider careers in product design and product engineering when making their A level and university course choices.  This year our educational campaign will form an integral part of our role as a partner for the Year of Engineering 2018, a government initiative that “celebrates the world and wonder of engineering.”

Peter Kay, DCA’s Head of Product Design for FMCG, held four presentations to students throughout the day about his role at DCA and his successful career within product design. Members of our technical recruitment and engineering teams also manned an information stand where they spoke with students who had an interest in engineering and industrial design.  We demonstrated a range of products we have recently designed to provide the students with a better understanding of the type of projects they might be asked to work on and the skills they would need.  We were also able to explain the importance of subjects such as maths, physics and design technology when considering a career in mechanical engineering or product design.

It was promising to see so many enthusiastic students keen to learn how DCA progresses projects from initial concept through to final products – many of which they have seen or even used themselves. We hope we succeeded in inspiring many budding product designers and engineers to consider future careers within the industry – and to make sure their subject choices keep these options open for them!
