DCA featured in Rail Professional: Answering human-centred design challenges
When there’s no prescribed dimension to design to, the question becomes a simpler one to ask and a more complex one to answer: can a real person actually do this, safely and confidently?
Rail standards define passenger areas and the driver’s cab precisely but offer far less prescriptive guidance for the spaces crew work in – galleys, crew control points, and maintenance areas. How do we design for the tasks undertaken in these areas, like connecting a heavy shore supply cable in a constrained underframe bay; operating an isolation valve under an access skirt; or manoeuvring an Atlas cart into a tight galley?
In a new article for Rail Professional, we look at how EVERYBODY – DCA’s system of customisable digital mannequins, built to represent a wider range of real body types and more realistic movement – helps answer those questions from first principles and gives teams, working directly within the 3D CAD environment, better evidence for the borderline cases where the answer isn’t obvious.
