LNER unveils its new fleet of “Serenza” Class 897 trains
On 2 February 2026, rail operator LNER unveiled its new fleet of “Serenza” Class 897 trains being built by CAF.
DCA collaborated closely with LNER and CAF on the development of the interior design of the new fleet. Our involvement spanned the full design journey—from developing the interior vision and defining the colour, materials, and finishes, to conducting theoretical and physical human factors assessments and producing the ergonomic and final presentation mock-ups.
The passenger saloons, vestibules, walkways, toilets, and shop servery were all designed to align seamlessly with LNER’s brand values. Working as a unified team, we have delivered a cohesive design vision that sets new standards for intercity train interiors. The images released represent the culmination of a two-year collaborative project.

“The ten state-of-the-art Class 897 trains will be the first new fleet introduced as part of Great British Railways (GBR) and will join our existing Azuma trains in the coming years.
Customers will benefit from enhanced seating comfort in both Standard and First Class, with reclining seats available in First Class.
New digital screens in every carriage will provide real-time journey and safety information. Customers will also be able to stay hydrated on the move, thanks to the introduction of five water bottle refill stations throughout the train.
Customer and stakeholder feedback has informed several design improvements, including redesigned onboard bike storage, softer lighting in First Class, and reconfigured tables to provide additional space for wheelchair users.”

While we are excited by the positive response that the launch has received based on the design vision and mock up images that have been released, we are even more eager to see the expected high levels of customer satisfaction once LNER’s new fleet enters service in the coming years.
