RAEDA - Home AI Personal Trainer

RAEDA is an AI home personal trainer that uses 3D depth mapping to provide real-time coaching, teaching correct form & technique when strength training.

Many of us (nearly 40%) are nervous about the gym because we are afraid of showing people that we don’t know what we are doing.

Technique and form are crucial when strength training, to avoid injury. To understand correct form & techniques you need to be taught whilst training. At present this can only be done through social interaction with a trainer / other gym goers.

Personal trainers are expensive, around £50 per hour session and a significant proportion of those wanting to train cannot afford a trainer. “44% of gym goers are too embarrassed to ask a member of staff in a gym for advice” (PURE gym, 2019).

Most people have explored some form of at home exercise during the COVID-19 2020 pandemic. “With 40% of consumers expecting to exercise more due to the ongoing pandemic, we can expect this new approach to at-home fitness to continue for months to come” (LSN Global, 2020). As people become more accustomed to at-home fitness experiences, RAEDA aims to support and facilitate this experience during and following lockdown.

RAEDA brings the experience of a personal trainer to the comfort of your own home. RAEDA will help to reduce injury through real-time coaching and enables live remote learning / training. This is something that longer term we may see a broader acceptance of, as live sessions with the likes of PE with Joe Wicks, become the norm. The device works with your smart TV providing an intuitive UI that shows a real-time visual straight from RAEDA’s camera. The TV acts like a mirror you’d find in a gym but shows you the correct form and technique for the given exercise, allowing you to adjust your form throughout.

RAEDA is a piece of ‘shy technology’ that blends into the home seamlessly. However, since consumers are becoming more concerned about technological surveillance, RAEDA has a physical turn-off function. The lens is hidden in the base of the device. To activate, the ball is removed from the base and placed on the flat spot located at the rear of the ball. The lens is now visible to the consumer and is ready for use.

The design of RAEDA was inspired by weights and gym equipment. It’s form and materials enable it look heavy, equally when picked up the product has a weighted feel to it. The base further emphasises weight through the concave detail that takes inspiration from an imprint that may be left in the ground when a heavy object is dropped.
